Volunteer with Teaching in Kenya

Volunteers are placed in either community schools or orphan helping schools. Sometimes we collaborate with the government to send volunteers to public schools in disadvantaged areas.. The teaching program is offered in:

  • Nairobi
  • Rural areas of Kenya especially in Maasailand

We have partner schools in very remote areas, the vast slums of Nairobi and other major towns, and the general rural Kenya. Many of the schools that we work with are understaffed and are always in need of a helping hand. There are three school terms in a year. During the breaks, the teaching volunteers usually take the time off to go and see wildlife or do other forms of safari. If they want to stay around, there is work always at the school, like painting, repair or renovations. What Does The Work Entail? The volunteer does not need to be a qualified or experienced teacher to teach. Volunteers teach in the following fields:

Volunteer with Women in Kenya

This volunteer programme works in two ways, however, the activities that the volunteers undertake are aimed towards the same goal which is to empower a woman.

  • We work with HIV/Aids centres where all the women involved are HIV/Aids positive. These are people who have faced the worst in their lives due to poverty, stigmatisation and abuse from mostly their husbands and close family members.
  • The second group are those women who are HIV/Aids negative but come from very poor homes and are not able to feed their children due to poverty. Their aim of coming together is to work together, give each hope in life, learn new skills etc.

In both the two groups they meet in one location on rented or sponsored premises on a daily basis to learn skills in bead work, dress making & sewing, soap making etc. They then sell the products that they make and out of it they earn little money. The skills also help them to make products e.g. necklaces, earrings etc and sell them individually which helps them support their families.

Volunteer with Children in Kenya

We offer volunteer placements in orphanages in both Nairobi and the rural areas. Work in an orphanage ranges from cooking, cleaning, taking care of babies to office work. The volunteers that work in orphanages are asked to help with work wherever they can because help is usually needed in more than one area. Some volunteers like to live inside the orphanage so that they can help with night work.

Orphanages in Kenya host 50 to 150 kids at any one time. There is a boys’ dormitory as well as girls’, a kitchen, an office, a garden, the toilets, laundry area and sometimes a baby nursery. Some volunteers like to be assigned to one particular area while others like to get a taste of everything. Some orphanages have schools (kindergartens) inside; volunteers that are placed in such orphanages may want to help with school as well. The volunteers in such schools take roles as teachers (basic math’s, English) they are also take part in Physical education and sports. They are encouraged to also introduce new games.
